Typically people wouldn’t categorize the greater Houston area as “walkable”. However, as evidenced by a website called WalkScore.com, people are wrong.
You can visit WalkScore.com, enter a zip code or address and the site will assign a number between 0-100 (the higher the more walkable) that measures an area’s walkability. Walkable neighborhoods offer surprising benefits to the environment, our health, our finances, and our communities.
Matt Lerner, who is Chief Technician Officer with Walk Score.com, says for some reason when it comes to walkability weather isn’t a factor.
“You know it’s funny weather matters less than people think. For example, you have cities like Minneapolis, which is a very cold city, but yet you see a lot of people walking and biking. What we’ve found at walk score is that the most important determining factor in terms of whether people walk, is whether you’re close to the kinds of things that people want to walk to on a daily basis.”
By which Lerner means grocery stores, coffee shops, restaurants and other amenities.
In Houston we have the opposite weather concern – heat and humidity. But we have cities and areas like Humble and King’s Harbor in Kingwood that offer residents and visitors the ability to walk to restaurants, grocery stores and other retail locations.
Come out and take advantage of our “walkability” by attending the FREE Keller Williams Northeast Concert Series, which takes place the third Friday of every month at King’s Harbor.
There are also multiple “MeetUps” in Houston specifically for people who enjoy walking and hiking.
