Seasonal Home Maintenance

Home Maintenance

Taking care of seasonal home maintenance is a great way to extend the life of certain elements of your home and head off larger maintenance problems later. Keller Williams Northeast Realty wants to help you protect your home investment.

January is a fickle month in Houston. Some years it’s so cold we don’t want to step outside. Some years it’s so warm we’re outside in shorts and tank tops. Some years, like this one, it’s freezing on Monday and 70 degrees by Wednesday.

Things that never change about January are the maintenance items you can do to keep your home running smoothly.

Indoor Home Maintenance

(1) Make sure all your doorknobs are working properly. Every January, tighten the screws that hold a doorknob to the spindle. Check the screws in the faceplate and see if they need tightening. Often, these can loosen. Don’t forget to lubricate the doorknob and latch with chemical lubricant. If you need some help, check out this YouTube video.

Outdoor Home Maintenance

(1) If you haven’t already done so, tree trimming is a must this month. Most trees are dormant this time of year and it’s best to trim trees while they are dormant to avoid the tree going into shock. Trimming and pruning in winter equal full, healthy trees in spring, and less chance of brittle, dead limbs to fall on your roof during our summer storms.

(2) Houston can get some beautiful January days. If the sun is shining and you’re tired of your winter tan, head outside and clean your gutters. Clogged gutters can lead to a moldy roof or siding.Gutter Clean Up

January is a time for recovery and new beginnings. Start the year off right. Go for a walk on a nice day. Take time to enjoy your home with a cup of tea. Find peace in the sounds of your family playing through the house.

Finally, make sure you have all the proper tools, are using proper safe methods and a safety partner during any type of home maintenance.
