Taking care of seasonal Houston home maintenance is a great way to extend the life of certain elements of your home and head off larger maintenance problems later. Keller Williams Realty Northeast wants to help you protect your home investment.
Indoor Houston Home Maintenance:
- Time to check the charge and expiration date on your fire extinguisher. Also, now is a great time to review how to use a fire extinguisher. Don’t know how? Check out this video for some pointers.
- Now is a great time to clean out your pantries. Look for items you no longer need and donate to a local food pantry, like HAAM, if the expiration date is still good. Throw out expired foods. Clean off your shelves and look into some organization tactics to make your pantry life a little simpler.
- Check the seals on your refrigerator door. This not only saves energy, but ensures your food stays at safe temperatures. You can do this by shutting the door on a dollar bill. If you can easily pull out the dollar bill, it’s time to replace those seals!
Outdoor Houston Home Maintenance:
- Turn on your dryer, go outside, and check to make sure hot air is blowing from the dryer duct exhaust. This simple and quick home check can indicate clogs and prevent fires! Also, make sure the dryer exhaust is secured tightly to your house. If not, make necessary repairs with either screws or caulk.
- Another fire prevention check is to check your electric meter. Look for the following:
- Meter opening should be closed and properly sealed to keep out moisture
- The meter box should be secured to your house
- Rust – indicator that water is getting into the box
- Make sure the seal between the service entrance cable and the top of the meter box is intact
- It’s not too late to get those trees trimmed! This is a great time of year to do so as most of the trees are still dormant from the winter.
